When it comes to outdoor, family fun, in the center part of the state, you can't beat Jackson County.

Less than a two-hour drive from Madison and the Twin Cities, Jackson County has been a vacation and recreation destination for many years. One of the main reasons is its vast amount of forest land -- The Black River State Forest, which covers 67,000 acres and the Jackson County Forest, which encompasses 118,000 acres. These two forest areas allow for some of the best recreational opportunities to be found anywhere in Wisconsin. You'll enjoy an extensive trail system, which winds its way through the forest providing ATVs, motorcyclists and snowmobiler's spectacular views of the surrounding landscape. There are also ample trails for horseback riding, hiking, and backpacking, mountain biking and cross-country skiing.

Those who enjoy water sports will love Lake Arbutus. You'll have a blast battling the walleye, musky, northern pike or bass found in the lake, while the rest of your family can ski, tube, fish or just catch a tan on the large beach and play area. About 10 miles from Lake Arbutus is the deepest lake in the state, Wazee. Wazee is an excellent place to enjoy a day of scuba diving or just walking around the lake on one of the beautiful and scenic nature trails. The crystal clear waters offer spectacular visibility and are home to many species of fish. Divers may find themselves swimming through an underwater forest, checking out the newly sunken boat, or perhaps examining some of the artifacts left behind by the former iron mining operation.

Many folks like Jackson County for its large deer population. In fact, it has earned the moniker of the "Deer Capital of Wisconsin." In addition to outstanding deer hunting, you can enjoy ruffed grouse, squirrel and wild turkey action.

In the winter months you're invited to ride the over 300 miles of groomed snowmobile trails found throughout the county. The trail offers a varied terrain -- from winding forestlands to steep rolling hills. If the quieter winter sports are more your style, you'll want to check out the cross-country ski trails that work their way through the Black River State Forest or maybe the downhill skiing found at Bruce Mound Ski Hill.

There's so much to do in Jackson County that you'll have trouble finding the time to do it all, but you'll never be bored trying.
