Welcome to the Chequamegon National Forest.

Trout StreamChequamegon is derived from an Ojibway word meaning "place of shallow water" referring to Lake Superior's Chequamegon Bay. The forest covers over a million and a half acres in northern Wisconsin and offers unlimited opportunities for all outdoor activities. From wilderness camping and cross country skiing to over 800 miles of designated snowmobile trails, there is something for everyone, and you will always feel like you have the world to yourself.
For the fisherman, there are over 2000 miles of streams and rivers (1400 miles are trout waters) and over 600 lakes. For the hunter, the Chequamegon is known for some of the largest record book whitetails in the world as well as being the "ruffed grouse capital of the world". In addition, turkeys are becoming more prevalent and there are areas managed for the return of the sharp-tail grouse. Of particular interest is the return of the woodland elk! Imagine seeing one of these majestic animals for yourself, native to these lands over 100 years ago!.
