No visit to the Keweenaw Peninsula would be complete without taking some time to visit one or more of our waterfalls. Many are located on the roadsides, or within easy walking distance on well-traveled paths. The water flow is the greatest in the spring when melting snow invigorates the streams & rivers. There is never a shortage of opportunities in the Keweenaw. Whether your quarry includes monster musky and pike or tasty walleye, numerous under fished inland lakes provide plenty of opportunities. Dozens of inland trout streams never leave someone willing to explore the wilds of the Keweenaw a shortage of options. Numerous charter fishing outings are available onto Lake Superior to take advantage of one of the best lake trout and salmon fisheries in the world.
For those who wish to see the beauty of the Keweenaw at a more active pace no fewer than seven mountain bike trail networks are available to explore. The Keweenaw offers some of the most unique riding in the state. The rocky and rugged terrain of the peninsula offers scenic vistas, wooded single tracks, dramatic uphills and downhills, and DNR rail-trails. For the road biker there are also many options available including the Brockway Mountain Pass and Houghton Covered Road.
Hundreds of miles of well groomed cross country ski trails are at your doorstep including the world class system through the campus of Michigan Tech University, home to several world class events including the 2007-2008 Junior World Championships. For the downhill skier be sure to explore Mount Ripley. Nearby Mount Bohemia, home of the only triple black diamond runs in the Midwest, which has been called the Jackson Hole of the Midwest by "Ski Magazine".
With virtually guaranteed snow the Keweenaw Peninsula lays claim to over 200 miles of unmatched trails, connect to over 2500 miles of some of the best snowmobiling anywhere.
The area offers some very unique diving trips including exploring shipwrecks from the early 1900's. Several area outfitters are available to help guide you on your first adventure.
Take a weekend and explore all eight lighthouses in the Keweenaw. Several of these were built in the 1850's giving the charm of days gone by.
Many of the most scenic parts of the Keweenaw have been preserved for all to use. Over two dozen scenic waterfront parks are at your doorstep offering many places to swim and picnic. For anyone seeking a true wilderness experience don't forget Isle Royal National Park. Isle Royal offers an unmatched wilderness experience with over 150 miles of hiking trails. Keep your eyes open for the resident moose which inhabit this national gem.
Explore the Keweenaw by boat from the Keweenaw Star. Take a dinner cruise through the scenic Portage shipping canal, or enjoy a lighthouse and fall colors tour around the entire peninsula. Be sure to bring a camera to take in the sandstone bluffs on Lake Superior which compare to Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore.
